Ceres is the only dwarf planet in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It is the only asteroid to round itself with its own gravity, and it has something many other objects in our region do not have; water. Ceres has water seeping onto its surface, suggesting the presence of an ancient underground ocean or at least a hydrated layer. Researchers found that the liquid comes from an underground reservoir of saltwater 25 miles beneath Ceres’ Occator Crater. The reservoir may be hundreds of miles wide. Ceres is the name for the Roman goddess of grain crops and harvests.
The Ceres Station which is featured in the awesome space TV series The Expanse is built on the dwarf planet Ceres. This space station is home to some six million residents and has anywhere between 800 to 1,000 ships docked on any given day.
